What do you think of Atticus's reaction to Bob Ewell's challenge? Should he have ignored Bob, retaliated or done something else? I feel like he acted like the bigger man by just walking away.
What is “circumstantial evidence”? What has it got to do with Tom's conviction?

What does Atticus tell Scout about why the jury took so long to convict Tom? He said that there was one person that was hard to wear down on voting guilty.

Why does Aunt Alexandra accept that the Cunninghams may be good but are not “our kind of folks”?

She fees like her family is proud and noble and not like the other non honest families.

Do you think that people should mix only with others of the same social class? Are class-divisions good or bad for societies? No i feel that every one is entitled to same rights as others, i feel like they are good in certain places that have problems with crime.

At the end of this chapter, Jem forms a new theory about why Boo Radley has never left his house in years. What is this? How likely is it to be true, in your opinion? He feels like he is chained to his bed. I feel like this is false because that would be hard for him to put the blanket on them during the fire scene

chp 22

Although Atticus did not want his children in court, he defends Jem's right to know what has happened. Explain, in your own words, Atticus's reasons for this. (Look at the speech beginning, “This is their home, sister”. He was most likely trying to show them the truth and cruelness of the town they live in and that some things arnt as pretty as they should be.

Miss Maudie tells Jem that “things are never as bad as they seem”. What reasons does she give for this view? The fact that even though they failed the court case he still gets to eat cake for at least trying.

Why does Dill say that he will be a clown when he grows up? Do you think he would keep this ambition for long? Its so he can laugh at people, but it probably wont last long since that is what clowns arnt suppose to do.

This story is set in the 1930s but was published in 1960. Have attitudes to racism remained the same (in the USA and the UK) or have there been any changes (for the better or worse) since then, in your view? I feel like there are less racist joke that have been used to insult or hurt people, even though some countries still hurt racial people in some places its used as comedy.

Why does Bob Ewell feel so angry with Atticus? Do you think his threat is a real one, and how might he try to “get” Atticus? Probably for making his family go through that embarresment and cruelty. He probably will try to go after his family or get the comunity after him

Summary of the court trial

The case started with Mr. Heck Tate saying how he calls Tom Robinson to the stand. He said how he called no one to help him when he saw his daughter supposedly, beaten and raped. His version was he Mr. Ewell came in and told him about his daughters problem and sped off to quickly stop it. He did say He saw Tom for a minute before he ran off like a coward. After that he just said that Tom used his hand to beat up her right when it actually was his left.
When it came to Mayella she only cried and acted mean towards Atticus. She only repeated that he helped her split the chifferobe when he later got behind her, choked her, then had his way with her. After that She only remembers him beating her then running away. Atticus managed to catch her mistake when he made her repeat it and give out more info than before.
Lastly was Tom Robinson his self. He said that hes been walking back and fourth from there house to get to work for years. He's had conversation with Mayella and that involved helping her do some chores. Soon enough he starts helping her dailey and with out payment. The last time he tried to help her though he ended up going into her house and Mayella trying to have her way with him. Being nice he stops her but then runs from hearing the shouts of Mr. Ewell saying he'll kill Mayella.

Mayellas and tom Robisons summarization

Mayela sounds rash and a little bit hateful towards the blacks, especially Atticus. She tells the court about the repeated factors like a broken recorder, saying how she was hit and beaten then raped.  As Atticus is being polite like he always is to her and the other questioned, it seems like Mayella is taking insult to it or like he's mocking her. She seems to be putting off that she's being forced into telling her side of the story by some one else when Atticus notices a flaw in what happened. After that she falls silent not saying any more and just cries to get out of her situation like she's gaining pity or sorrow from the judge and listeners. Her home life seems to be revolved around being the mom of the siblings since she was the only one besides the father to learn and finish school.

We will read chapter 19 and 20 today.  I want you to record Tom Robinson's testimony, and your reaction to it, on your blogs for homework.  How is Tom Robinson like a mockingbird?

Tom Robinson said that he has been walking past the Ewells house for as long as he can remember in order to get to and from work. He has occasionally talked to Mayella but never for long amounts of time. Soon he started to work for her with his first chore being to split a chiferobe. After doing that he rejected her money and soon started doing even more jobs from her. One day though she soon invited him into her house where she soon tried o have her way with him. Tom was attempting to stop her but soon Mr. Ewell saw them and broke it up, then Tom ran away.
Tom is like a Mocking bird because as a one just sings its heart out to others and doesn't cause any trouble, Tom just helps out others for free. He's never caused any trouble besides his one crime and doesn't ask for anything in return.

to kill a mocking bird questions

Why is Scout so looking forward to starting school?
Scout loves to learn and thinks it would be neat if she could show off her skills in school.
Why does Jem not want anything to do with Scout at school? Is his behaviour typical of an older child?
She would feel soft and embarassed by being with her. yes most older siblings would like there own time to look cool and hang out with there friends.

What do you think of Miss Caroline Fisher as a teacher? Can you find qualities which would make her good or not so good at her job?
She is really determined on trying to make these kids learn the way she was taught. She told scout to go back to her dad and tell him to stop teaching her. I think that was not a good thing to say since she hasnt even had one day to look and study the kids to see if they learn differently.

What does Scout think of current fashions in education?
What superstitions do the children have in connection with the Radley house?
Why do the children make Boo's story into a game?
What do they do in this game? Do you think the game is an accurate version of what happens in the Radleys' home?
What might be the cause of the laughter from inside the house?

  • Why does Scout disapprove of Jem's and Dill's plan of looking in at one of the Radleys' windows? Scout does not want to go against Attica' rules.
  • What does Mr. Nathan Radley know about the intruders in his garden? All he knows is that he heard some one or something back there.
  •  Why does Miss Stephanie refer to a “negro” over whose head Mr. Nathan has fired? Miss Stephanie assumes that because of the town that they live in (south) it was a black person that caused the problem.
Why does Dill's explanation of Jem's state of dress almost land him in trouble? Dill's explanation of Jem's state of dress almost got them trouble because he made up a lie about them playing strip poker.

1) Outline the plot so far So far the story
Exposistion starts with Scout a young kid heading to the first year of school, but gets in trouble for learning more than she should've. He tells the teacher Mrs. Caroline how the kids. Then on the way back she finds two pieces of mint gum on a tree in front of Boo Radly's house. Then there was a problem when Scout and jem tried to sneak up h Boo's house but end up almost getting caught and killed. lastly a fire broke out in Miss Maudies house. Only some of the furniture was saved, but after it was put out Scout soon realized that she had a blanket and it was Boo Radly that put it on her.

2) List one theme and write 2-3 scenes from the book that fit that theme
One theme is the call to help. In CHapter 8 the whole town comes to help put out Miss maudies burning house. they also did help save some of her furniture and boo radly thoughtfully gave Scout a warm blanket.
3) Make a list of people Scout fits?
 Walter Cunningham and Dill.
4) Make a list of lessons Scout has learned so far.
to try and see peoples lives through there skins, and that boo radly isnt a bad person.

Why does Scout quiz Atticus about his visit to the Radley house? How much does Atticus tell her? If he saw Boo Radly and he tells her nothing.
What is the “near libel” which Jem puts in the front yard? How do Miss Maudie and Atticus react to it? The half dirt snow man and is Mr. Avery.

Why does Atticus save Miss Maudie's oak rocking chair? It was one of the only few treasures she loved and had left.

When Atticus asks Scout about the blanket around her shoulders, what does Jem realize? They were so focused on the fire and panicking that they missed Boo Radley put the blanket on them.

Explain what Atticus means by telling Jem not to let his discovery “inspire ” him to “further glory”? Is there any reason why Jem might now do as his father says? He tells Jem not to visit or make friends with Boo Radly. Yes because he knows that Boo Radly isn't a really
bad person.

Scout says that “Atticus was feeble”. Do you think that this is her view as she tells the story or her view when she was younger? Does she still think this after the events recorded in this chapter? This is her view when she was younger because soon afterwards people tell her and she notices that he can and was able to do things when he was young.
In this chapter Atticus tells his children that “it's a sin to kill a mockingbird”. What reason does he give for saying this? the mocking birds never give us trouble the only thing they do is sing there hearts out to us.
Why does Heck Tate not want to shoot Tim Johnson? He thinks theres still a chance for the dog to turn around and get better.
Near the end of this chapter Atticus cuts off Heck Tate as he is speaking to Jem. What might Heck have been about to say, and why would Atticus want to stop him from saying it? The best shot in town.
Jem and Scout have different views about telling people at school how well Atticus can shoot. Explain this difference. Which view is closer to your own? That he is indeed a gentlman while the other says hes a deadly impressive shot. I think he is a gentleman.

Comment on Jem's and Scout's visit to First Purchase church.
What new things does Scout learn here about how the black people live?
What does Scout learn from Calpurnia's account of Zeebo's education?
Explain why Calpurnia speaks differently in the Finch household, and among her neighbours at church.

1) List and explain a theme that fits this chapter
Racism because at the church Lula asks Calpurnia what she was thinking bringing the white kids to a black church.
2) List all the characters who appear in the chapter

Reverand Sykes, Zeebo, Jem, Scout, Aunt Alexandria, Lula and Calpurnia.
3) Find one symbol

Dill= He acts like a symbol of child hood innocence
4) briefly summarize what happens in the chapter

Jem is now age 12 and start to ignore or annoy Scout. The kids are taken to Calpurnias church where they realize what was happening on Tom Robinson's case. after church Lula asks calpurnia why she brought these kind of kids to there church.

Chapter 14 and 15
  • Comment on Atticus's explanation of rape. How suitable is this as an answer to Scout. I think that he thought Jem was a little young too learn the straight answer so he just improvised with a more smarter term. i feel like this is a smart move because soon Jem could ask a little more than he needs to know.
  • Why does Alexandra think Atticus should dismiss Calpurnia? How does Atticus respond to the suggestion? She thinks that Calpurnia is teaching and showing more info about life than she needs too. Atticus replys by saying no and the family loves her.
  • Why is Scout pleased when Jem fights her back? Why is she less pleased when he tells Atticus about Dill? He is happy because she still had a litttle bit child hood in her until that is wasted and she has the maturity to tell Atticus about the situation.
  • What do we learn from Dill's account of his running away? He had to go about three hundred miles and he says that his parents didn't want any thing to do with him by buying all sorts of toys.
  • What is the “nightmare” that now descends upon the children?
  • What was (and is) the Ku Klux Klan? What do you think of Aticcus's comment about it?
  • How does Jem react when Atticus tells him to go home, and why?
  • What persuades the lynching-party to give up their attempt on Tom's life?
  • Comment on the way Scout affects events without realizing it at the time.

After the presentations, your group will be outlining what happened in Act 4 and posting these to your blog.

Homework for next week: Read Act 5 and write a 1-sentence headline for each scene (note - there are very few scenes in Act 5).

First it starts with juliet wanting to kill herself and asking for a plan on how to get out of his marriage. While paris is trying to cheer Juliet up about the marriage being good. Friar Laurence feeling sorry for Juliet tells her the idea that she will fake her death by drinking a poison, then waking up in a tomb where Romeo will be waiting and then they'll run off to Mantua.
Juliet ends up doubting the plan after begging for forgiveness from her father who finally forgave her. She then after thinking about how happy she'll be drinks the vial and goes to sleep.
Nurse ends up screaming as she realizes the next morning that juliet's dead. Lord Capulet soon changes the wedding and everything into a funeral and feast.
During the marradge Capulet and the friar starts fighting about not celebrating or singing to her death.
